Committed to Win or Committed to Comfort?

Winning has been defined as achieving success, victory, or a desired outcome in a competitive situation. It can involve surpassing opponents, achieving personal or collective goals, or attaining a position of advantage. For a one word definition winning can be defined as to succeed.

The question is are you committed to win or are you committed to comfort?

Being committed to winning is easy to say and hard to do. There can be several things that can influence the outcome of winning. Winning will require you to go from obstacle to obstacle without losing enthusiasm. Winning is a long term game where effort today does not equal winning today or tomorrow. Instead you must take on a long term game mindset if you are going to be committed to winning and not comfort.

Comfort is easy. Its where you settle in a routine that no longer stretches you, grows you, or develops you. Comfort is a trap, its where your goals don't move you, where you allow mediocrity to slip in, and its where you tell your self the lie of - "ill get to that tomorrow". Ultimately comfort is when you have lowered the bar for your life because you have face challenges you no longer want to face.

I want to help you make that shift from comfort to winning. Not just winning professionally but winning personally to.

There are 2 areas of focus that we first must commit to:

  1. Commit to mastery of self and self improvement.

  2. Commit to self leadership and management.

Mastery of self deals with you having a continuous mindset to grow and develop. To remain curious and find you zone of genius. Which is the area where passion, work not seeming like work, and an abundance of satisfaction is there. This is your unique area of contribution and where you want to make an impact.

Self leadership is how you go about influencing yourself to do what you should do even when you don't feel like it. This is something those that have reached high levels of success are able to do consistently over time. Lastly become committed to mastering the fundamentals moving from idea to execution.

We will cover these more in depth at a later time. Both of those above require certain disciplines that we will cover next week. Lets get into the traits required for you to be committed to winning.

Be Relentless

Whatever you want to win in will require you to be relentless. Relentless is defined as someone that is persistent, unyielding, and determined in pursuing a goal or objective, often to an extreme degree. It suggests an unwavering commitment, continuous effort, and a refusal to give up or be deterred by obstacles, challenges, or setbacks. Relentlessness implies a relentless pursuit of excellence or achievement, characterized by perseverance, tenacity, and an unshakeable resolve to overcome any barriers or difficulties encountered along the way.

Being relentless often comes with an inner intensity where you demand nothing but excellence from yourself and others around you. It shows up as accountability and partnerships with others that share the same values. Being relentless means you are owning your actions and you are taking responsibility towards winning.

Be Focused

Being committed to win means that a majority of your focus is geared towards - winning. Focus is when you have directed attention or concentration on a particular task, goal, or objective, while excluding distractions or irrelevant information. It involves the ability to maintain mental clarity and prioritize one's attention and efforts towards a specific target or desired outcome. Focus enables individuals to channel their energy and resources efficiently, enhancing productivity, problem-solving abilities, and overall performance. It often involves blocking out distractions, staying committed to a task or objective, and maintaining a clear sense of purpose or direction.

Focus involves you saying NO to a lot to say YES to the thing you are focused on. Being committed to win means being absolute in putting all of your energy and attention to winning. Your focus must be unyielding if you desire to win.

Be Disciplined

To win will require you to discipline your mind, actions, and choices. Discipline is the practice of training oneself to adhere to a set of rules, standards, or principles in order to achieve a desired outcome or behavior. It involves self-control, obedience, and the ability to regulate one's actions, thoughts, and emotions in alignment with a chosen course of action or code of conduct. Discipline requires consistency, perseverance, and a willingness to endure discomfort or inconvenience in pursuit of long-term goals or objectives. It encompasses habits of self-restraint, responsibility, and accountability, fostering personal growth, development, and success.

Winning requires an insane amount of discipline this is why whatever you decide to win in, needs to be an area that fits your zone of genius. All winning requires commitment.

Now that you know what being committed to winning looks like - I want you to forget about winning! That's right I want you to instead make this shift in mindset and think on this:

Winning does not matter, what matters is how you go about doing what you need to do?

Here is Leadership Operating System for being committed to winning looks like:

Our goal is simple - to win. Where you will lose at is not defining the win and the actions that will take you there.

  1. Set the goal - I am going to win in my ________ (career, fitness, relationships, business, etc..)

  2. Define the mindset, behavior, actions, and choices that need to made to win in the area you defined. These ALL need to be something you do, something you act on, or perform.

  3. Create a plan. Your plan needs to have daily actions, weekly actions, and monthly actions. All of these need to go on your calendar just like a doctor appointment would, a work meeting, or an event you need to attend.

  4. Develop an organizing system where this can be easily accessed and used with ease.

  5. Develop a weekly or daily review to track progress. All you need here is what is going well, what is not going well, and how do I need to adjust? Don't overlook this step as you need to create a feedback loop to process steps 1-4. You will constantly be making adjustments as life is not static.

Lastly celebrate your wins. Had a consistent week of wins - celebrate! We beat ourselves up enough when we fail, but I do not feel we celebrate ourselves enough when we win.

This upcoming week I want you to recommit to winning and I also want you to take time to go through these steps. Remember is not just being committed that counts but what matters is how you are going to go about winning that does matter!
